Classification in combined phrases: noun-noun conjunctions and intersective, subsective and privative adjective-noun combinations
نویسنده
چکیده
How is the meaning of an adjectivenoun phrase related to the meanings of its adjective and noun constituents? Different types of adjective produce different relations between a combination and in its constituent adjectives and nouns. Current theories give separate mechanisms for each adjective type. This paper shows how a computational model originally developed to explain classification in noun-noun conjunctions also gives a single explanation for combinations involving standard intersective adjectives, subsective adjectives such as "skilful", and privative adjectives such as "fake". This model may lead to a unified account of naturallanguage word combination.

Adjectives: A Uniform Semantic Approach
Despite their simple syntactic form, adjective-noun combinations seem to have no straightforward semantic method that parallels the simplicity of the syntax. This has led to the conventional belief that adjectives belong to a (semantically motivated) hierarchy. This has the consequence that a uniform treatment of adjectives is unattainable—without resorting to notions such as possible worlds, w...

The central claim in that work was that adjective meanings should be analyzed as functions from properti...

متن کاملThe Absence of the Adjective Category in Korean
This paper argues that Korean lacks a distinct, open category of Adjective; what have been traditionally analyzed as adjectives are a kind of stative verbs. I propose that apparent noun-modifying adjectives in Korean are predicates inside relative clauses. The proposed analysis makes several predictions about the syntax and semantics of noun modifiers in Korean. In particular, it predicts that ...
